Mervyn started exhibiting at the Chelmsford Arts Festival in the Chelmsford and Essex Museum in 1972, again in 1976 and 1977.

His paintings were accepted for the Royal Society of British Artists exhibitions in the Mall Galleries in 1973, 1974 and 1983.

In 1992 he had a painting accepted for the first time with the Colchester Art Society and for most of their annual exhibitions until 2020.

He first participated in the Braintree Summer Open in 1993 and subsequently received the top prize at the exhibition in both 2004 and 2005.

Also, in 2005 the painting, Woman at bench lathe was awarded Best In show and £2,000 prize at the Eastern Open in Kings Lynn.

In 2009 he was awarded best painting at the Beecroft Gallery at Westcliff, Southend and had paintings accepted at the new Beecroft Gallery, Southend in 2016, 2017 & 2018.
